International Law

Some matters do not fit inside a single country: a marriage celebrated abroad, an estate with assets in two states, a foreign judgment that has no effect here until it is recognised, a contract between companies from different countries. The first question is never who is right, but which court decides and which law applies.

Flags of several countries waving on their poles

What we do

  • We establish which court has jurisdiction and which law applies before anything else begins.
  • We handle recognition and enforcement in Spain of decisions issued abroad, and the reverse.
  • We arrange the legalisation and apostille of foreign documents, and their sworn translation.
  • We apply for the registration in the Civil Registry of events that took place outside Spain: marriages, births, divorces.
  • We act in estates with assets or heirs in more than one country.
  • We draft international contracts setting the applicable law and forum from the outset.

What people usually bring us

  • A document from your country that no counter here will accept.
  • A divorce decree issued abroad that still does not appear in Spanish records.
  • An estate with part of the assets in another country.
  • A contract signed with a foreign company that has stopped performing.

An international matter depends on two legal systems and sometimes on a treaty between the two countries. The first thing we will do is tell you whether that route exists: some documents and decisions simply have no place in Spain, and knowing it on day one saves money on a closed road.
